Rayman 2: The Great Escape
Rayman 2: The Great Escape
Description (IGDB)
With its enchanted storybook look beautifully translated into 3D, lush, vibrant colors, funny enemy designs, and clever jumping puzzles, Rayman 2 is platforming perfection. No arms, no legs, no problem for the little French creation that could.
Histoire (IGDB)
Rayman 2 takes place in a world called the Glade of Dreams. An army of Robot Pirates, led by Admiral Razorbeard, invades this world and destroys the Heart of the World, the world core. This greatly weakens the resistance's power and disables Rayman's powers, leading to his capture. Globox, a friend of Rayman, is later also captured and put in the same cell as Rayman aboard the Pirates' prison ship. Globox gives Rayman a silver lum given to him by Ly the fairy, which restores his powers. Rayman escapes the prison ship, and is separated from Globox again. He learns that to stand a chance against the Pirates, he needs to find four ancient magic masks to awaken Polokus, the spirit of the world, hidden in secret and mysterious sanctuaries consisting of the four elements water/ice, earth/stone, fire, and air. He travels through the Glade of Dreams via the Hall of Doors, a magical place linked to various locations in the world, controlled by the ancient Teensies. In the course of the game, Rayman frees Globox who had been captured again, and they continue together for a short while until Globox departs again to go find his family. Later, Rayman finds Globox's wife Uglette and learns that he has been imprisoned on the Prison Ship. Rayman also encounters his friend Clark, a strongman who has stomach problems due to eating rusty pirates; to continue through the level, Rayman has to cure Clark by means of an elixir. Eventually, Rayman recovers the four masks and awakens Polokus, who makes quick work of the pirates on land. In the air however, he has no power, and Rayman is tasked to dispose of the Pirates' flying Prison Ship, where Admiral Razorbeard also has his headquarters. In a final battle Rayman fights Razorbeard, who is controlling a giant robot, the Grolgoth. Eventually Rayman destroys the robot and while Razorbeard escapes in a small escape pod, the Prison Ship explodes. Rayman is presumed dead and only one of his shoes is found, but during his funeral, he appears again, walking on a crutch.

« Yes, this Rayman is not new, it's "only" the 3D remake of a very good old game... but it remains a safe bet! The game is cute, playable, and the magic is still there in this 3DS version. One of the must-have of the 3DS launch line-up. »
« A solid, smooth transition to Nintendo's 3DS as an enjoyable port that does the original version justice. »
« The addition of 3D is nice, but those who have already experienced the joys of Rayman 2 can probably move on. The rest of you should take this opportunity to see what you've been missing. [April 2011, p.85] »
« With Mario nowhere to be found at the Nintendo 3DS launch, Rayman fills the platformer gap nicely. I had a blast playing it again, and look forward to reviewing it for a fifth time at some point in the near future. »
« It's a good porting, but it still gets sold for a full price, some 10 years after its first appearance. 3D and some gameplay fixes don't fully justify the bargain. »
« A nice throwback to old school platforming; a good playing, but muddy looking, 3D extravaganza. »
« Surprisingly enjoyable. I say surprising because at the ripe old age of twelve, you'd expect the mechanics to be grey and riddled with arthritis. Despite a camera that often refuses to behave itself, Rayman 3D is as robust as it is enjoyable. »
« Rayman jumps in the 3rd dimension with this new edition of the second chapter of the series. He's in good shape, but now we want him to be the star of a REALLY new adventure! »
Avis des Joueurs (Metacritic)
« That’s how I discovered the game with it, and even if I had great memories with it, it’s definitely one of if not the worst Rayman 2 port out there. It’s pretty much the Dreamcast version without the exclusive content, and with worse performance and glitches (although some of them can be a bit funny). It’s not disgustingly bad but I would DEFINITELY avoid this version if this is your first time playing Rayman 2. »
« You can tell the game is dated, especially the camera work is awful, but after a couple of levels you really want to keep going. Unique gloomy atmosphere gives it a certain charm. Riding walking shell was really cool 7+/10. »

« I love Rayman 2, but even my nostalgia for the game can't gloss over the fact that this is just a shoddy port of the Dreamcast version with an absolutely abysmal framerate and no improvements whatsoever. Even playing the N64 original is a better experience than this. »
« While this game may be a remake that was not needed I do think it didn't deserve this hate, This was my first experience in the rayman series and since finishing it a couple years ago I've been a big rayman fan. This reboot is still a good game where I have almost 30 hours in. Wouldn't suggest buying it today if you have the ps1 but if you only have a 3ds an just want a good rayman game, then it's a good buy. »
« El mayor problema aqui es que esa versióon esta plagada de bugs. Si no fuera por eso seria de los mejores juegos de la 3DS, porque rayman 2 es de los mejores plataformas 3D que jugué en la Nintendo 64, pero no se puede admitir que un juego lanzado en 2011 tenga una calidad inferior al original de 1999. »
« Played in 2021. This is a decent little game. I had a good time clearing this out of my backlog but I wasn’t blown away. The level design is not as interesting as Mario 64 or Banjo Kazooie and a lot of the gameplay is pretty linear. It’s not necessarily a bad thing and the game does have some good puzzles and secrets hidden. The game doesn’t force you to backtrack much and is pretty generous about the number of secrets you need to find to progress which keeps frustration low but it doesn’t do much to reward completionists. Overall I enjoyed Earthworm Jim 3D (which came out around the same time and which I also played recently) more than this game. I found Rayman 3D was still worth my time though as it is not too long and it does not overstay its welcome! »
