À propos du jeu

Inspiration from...

The gory thrills of giallo, the suspense of slashers, and the otherworldly charm of 70s and 80s sci-fi.

We're thrilled to bring you a chilling adventure that blends cinematic horror with the nostalgic vibes of '90s 16-bit games.

How to Save the Game?

After waking from the nightmare and answering the mysterious phone call, Sarah can unlock manual saving by interacting with the cigarette pack in the kitchen.

How to use it: In your inventory, drag the cigarette onto the lighter to bring up the save menu.

Midnight Special is a point-and-click survival horror experience that echoes the spirit of '90s classics like Clock Tower and Resident Evil. Set in the late '80s at Boyd Manor, you step into the shoes of Sarah, a babysitter tasked with watching over Jon and Ellie Boyd for the night.

What begins as an ordinary evening takes a sinister turn.

The power goes out, plunging the house into pitch-black darkness. With each step, reality twists into something far more disturbing.

  • Bizarre phone calls, a deranged stalker perhaps?

  • Unpleasant odors seeping up from the floorboards.

  • Objects moving on their own as if possessed.

  • A life-sized plastic dinosaur that seems... alive.

Has Sarah lost her mind? Or has something far more sinister taken root?

  • Classic Point-and-Click Survival Horror

Explore a foreboding environment filled with chilling surprises, puzzles to solve, and secrets to uncover.

  • A Tribute to Retro Horror

Influenced by '70s and '80s horror cinema and '90s gaming, Midnight Special blends nostalgia with heart-pounding suspense.

  • Atmospheric 16-Bit Graphics

Gorgeous handcrafted visuals capture the eerie, cinematic tone in stunning pixel art.

  • Psychological Thrills

Question everything as reality twists and warps around you. Can you trust what you see?

  • Immersive Audio Design

An immersive, spine-tingling soundtrack and unnerving audio cues heighten the tension with every step you take.

With its carefully woven narrative, Midnight Special invites players to step into a story of psychological terror and mystery. Every corner holds a secret, and every clue leads you deeper into a horrifying truth.

If you're a fan of:

  • Classic survival horror

  • Point-and-click adventures

  • Atmospheric mysteries that keep you guessing

...then Midnight Special is ready to pull you into the darkness.

Do you dare enter the manor?

Patch #3: Partial Controller and Steam Deck Fix, Improvements, and Bug Fixes

Hi all. It has been a hot minute since the last update, but I am back with a new build that contains new fixes and improvements. It has been quite a difficult endeavor fixing all of the annoying inconsistencies occurring with controller and Steam Deck support. For a bit of transparency, the way that the engine is built, porting controller support is easy, but ironing out all of the issues and inconsistencies is the hard part. Porting the game to controller was initially done as a player suggestion that cost a lot more time than I had originally anticipated. In short, it is essentially like developing two games at once. Rant notwithstanding, the controller and Steam Deck support is closer to being ready. I have done my best to remove any "double selection" instances from the inventory menu, but there are still locations where this is very apparent, for example, when interacting with the computer or the fake save. These will be addressed in the next patch, hopefully. There is a new and hopefully improved main inventory menu. The menu now displays each item's description and instructions on how to interact with some objects.Added a more unified way of interacting with objects in the inventory menu. Documents and objects that can be inspected in the inventory menu should act in a similar fashion, making things hopefully smoother and more intuitive. There are still some weird interactions; for example, when opening a big document and exiting, you will notice the selection on the controller is automatically set to the filter selection.Added a wait timer on drawings when you interact with them to ensure double selection is not possible.Added sounds and new notifications for specific inventory items, for example, when a key is moved as a result of inspecting an item.Added a secondary main graphic to spare keys when they are inspected.Added a way to make the taxidermy in the tea room stop laughing by interacting with it. I am sure this annoyed lots of people as it did me.Improved the candle message when the timer runs out.Revamped Tina's hints in the inventory and when used in a room.Fixed some trigger interactions, and I will continue to look into triggers and make sure no weird jank occurs.Fixed the clock still being disabled if you interact with the computer and then exit.Various localization errors have been fixed, but if you see any issues, please let me know. What is currently planned/being worked on:New free story content plus a free DLC for Halloween. This is my way of showing my appreciation to people for being understanding amidst the incredibly dreadful release out of early access.Adding the ability to bypass the "Use Lighter" prompt on closeups if you already have the lighter on.Adding the ability to burn things with the lighter as well, not just with the candles.Working on various lore documents pertaining to the bathroom interaction.Adding some sort of icon that lets the player know when the inventory menu, or menus in general, are blocked from usage to reduce confusion.Replacing the half baked skull spider interactions with new objectives and interactions.Improving the ink monster interaction, or perhaps adding additional content.Thinking of ways to add extra content around the Abomination - perhaps more context and lore or an onjective?New music tracks for Mawie gameplay. I have always wanted to use a vintage 8 bit Casio keyboard to write a song for the Mawie gameplay and perhaps the intro, so I might just do that.I will try to parse this content out at least once a month. In addition, I'd like to ask any bilingual players who feel their respective language or translation is missing something or could be better, please feel free to reach out on Discord. While I cannot afford to pay you, I can offer keys, access to future games I am working on, and feature you in the credits section of the game.Thank you all, and see you soon.Sincerely,Scared Stupid Inc. aka Alexandru Hagiu.

Patch #2 - 1.7.5

Hi all! It's been a long week, but I was able to address a lot of the issues that you brought to my attention since the release. Please keep in mind that there's still some jank, for example with the controller, but I'm also working on fixing that, hopefully sooner rather than later. In the meantime, here's a comprehensive list of everything that was fixed in build 1.7.5. If you still encounter any issues, please let me know. I plan on releasing more free content soon, continuing to polish the game, and adding features requested by playersIssues fixed.Infinite candle spawn fixed – Stops after you interact with the crack.Clock display fixed – It would enable after the computer sequence if it was disabled by the player.Removed laugh from hole in the wall – Tina no longer laughs in that region.Grain of salt objective fixed – Objective not updating resolved.Shotgun objective fixed – Should now update all states. Objective fixed – call the cops – Didn't prompt after kid's interaction (barrel). Objective fixed – find the kids – The incorrect dialogue would play in the red room with the phone if you interacted with the kids in the barrel. Still requires a complete state for future DLC.Removed the random bullet drop from the shotgun in normal mode – You now receive 5 bullets per box of shells in normal mode.Secret Red Room 4 fix – Main menu was broken.Removed () naming convention from main menu (e.g., (I)nventory, (C)haracter) – Requires updates to translation.Filter translations: add variable text to translations – Variables will be added in the document extraction. Inventory filter has 6 categories: All, Key Items, Keys, Documents, Weapons, Other. Objective filter has 4 categories: All, Active, Failed, Complete.Removed ghost achievements – There were 5 ghost achievements on Steam that appeared to players; they have been deleted to avoid confusion.Added visual indicator letting the player know the doors in guest rooms are blocked – Added boarded assets to the doors in guest rooms and a note about them being boarded up.Autosave slot visible on load menuFixed hidden room/fake save (added new hints, improved triggers, added doors and sound, improved Save UI – made it larger, bigger buttons, easier to press).Possibly fixed character spinning issue (lowered destination accuracy in settings manager – this was an engine issue, not a bug). Set Destination Accuracy to 1 in Settings and player's Acceleration to 20 and Turn Speed to 20.Fixed issue where reloading weapon or using any other item while smoking would make the character invisible.Added the family crest under the hanging body – This adds context to what Henry said during the Hole In The Wall interaction.Lighter switch issue in Guest Room. Ivan Boss Battle & Related Fixes:Fixed overly long wait time during Ivan boss battle – After being shot in the head, he would take too long to start following. This was caused by an update frequency setting, changed from 2 to 0.5.Fixed Ivan's pathfinding to be more exact.Fixed issue where manually reloading and attempting to load again while loaded would cause the weapon aim toggle to break. Fixed by resetting the menu; the menu was closed but the variable wasn't reset, requiring the user to open and close the menu to reset.Fixed grab jank with Ivan/Sarah – After a specific grab attempt while trying to pass Ivan, player and enemy positions were incorrect.Added check for shotgun pack – Fixed premature game over.Fixed Ivan issue – If you reload and he gets close, then aim for his head/body, it no longer breaks the animation.Ivan: Changed screwdriver position after shooting Ivan and added pulse for better visibility.Fixed Ivan menu disable during battle – It was being set to cinematic mode and this caused an issue where you couldn't open the menu.Ivan: Changed step sounds.Fixed weapon aim toggle (T key) not functioning properly.Added notes from Angela as inventory items – These hint at the fuse and Ivan.Other Fixes:Fixed issue in Jon's room where the light message and previous interaction would cause text overlap.Removed notification when picking up shotgun during interactions with the skull spider that was locking the player. The password field is now cleared upon each computer startup.

A chance for the community to improve Midnight Special

Hi all,I hope everybody is having a great weekend. While we're working on the next patch, I'd like to take this chance to open the floor to everyone who has purchased and played the game to offer constructive criticism on what they'd like to see improved or fixed in the game, and even features they'd like to see. On my part, I'll do my best to accommodate people. Before we start, though, here is a list of issues, improvements, and features we're currently working on:Spanish localization: Spanish is being worked on. I know it's frustrating that it's not there, but it couldn't be helped.Inconsistencies when playing with a controller: You've probably noticed some weird issues when playing with a controller. It's actually something handled by the engine. I'm currently in talks with the developer of the engine, trying to figure out how to fix the issues.Autosave feature for Normal mode: I've started adding an autosave trigger in various critical sections of the game to ensure that people won't have to replay hours of the game to get back to a specific point.General jank: The publisher and I are performing daily tests of the game, highlighting inconsistencies and bugs, and fixing them as we find them. If you find anything of that nature, please do let us know in case we missed it.Localization: We've done our best to ensure all languages are properly localized, but if you happen to find any particular sections misleading or incorrect, please let us know. The English version relies heavily on idioms, wordplay, and riddles that can be difficult to translate while maintaining both their accuracy and the specific meaning required for a solution. The Cul-de-sac timer: The timer is disabled for now, but it will be available in the next patch. If anyone's curious about what it unlocks, I've already posted the trailer to the sequel in this forum.Thank you for taking the time to read this and for all your support. Please feel free to comment down below with suggestions. I will do my best to answer each comment.Regards, Scared Stupid Inc.
